New Medicine Service

The New Medicine Service is a new NHS service, provided by Pharmacists to any patient who has been prescribed a new medicine to treat one of the four following conditions:

This service will be introduced nationally from October 2011.

  • Asthma / Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Antiplatelet / Anticoagulant therapy - "blood thinners"
  • Hypertension - "high blood pressure"

This service involves two short interviews with the Pharmacist, either in person or over the telephone.

The first interview takes place one or two weeks after you have started the new medicine . This will allow the Pharmacist to identify any problems or side-effects you may be having.

The second follow-up interview takes place two weeks after the first and is designed to ensure you are continuing to take the medicine correctly and to discuss any issues that may have been raised at the first interview.

This is a free NHS service.
